Full description

On 8 July 1938, a public meeting was held to discuss and cast a vote on whether a local hospital would be built. The outcome was unanimously in favour of the proposal and a committee was formed. The first annual meeting of that provisional committee was held in November 1939. Originally, two committees were active; the committee formed after the public meeting, and one formed separately by Mordialloc residents. In 1941, both parties united and a provisional committee was formed, with the first annual meeting occurring on 12 June 1942.

On 23 September 1949, tenders were called for construction of the hospital. Construction work commenced on the Mordialloc Community Hospital in 1950 (Hospital and Charities Commission (HCC) Annual Report for financial year 1949-1950, page 7), with the then-Governor of Victoria General Sir Reginald Alexander Dallas Brooks laying the foundation stone on 13 September. The Governor opened the hospital on 7 March 1953. The hospital was a going-concern in 1953 (HCC Annual Report for financial year 1952-1953, page 7) by which time it was known as Mordialloc-Cheltenham Community Hospital. It was listed in the annual report under the heading: 'Subsidized Charitable Institutions and Benevolent Societies'. The hospital’s first patients were received on 3 June 1953.

The hospital's Board of Management was originally called the Committee of Management. It met from 1953. The First Annual Meeting of Contributors following the opening of the Hospital took place on 19 August of that year. The first Annual Report was for the year ended 31 March 1954.

In August 1995 Mordialloc-Cheltenham Community Hospital joined with other organisations, including the Monash Medical Centre (VA 2823), to form the Southern Health Care Network, which later became Southern Health on 31 December 2001. It was renamed Monash Health (VA 5264) on 20 May 2013. The hospital closed in 1996.

Upon the closure of Mordialloc-Cheltenham Community Hospital, the Monash Medical Centre (Moorabbin campus) became the custodian of the hospital's records.

Data time period: [1953 TO 1996]
