Brief description Government policy formation will benefit from quantified understanding of impacts of new transit oriented urban development (TOD) and from retrofitting TOD in older areas. The study will help answer whether investment in TOD benefits residents (by reducing travel costs and increasing access to employment opportunities) and communities (by reducing environmental and infrastructure costs). Knowledge of these impacts in the Australian context will encourage urban developers, local and State governments to align urban planning and infrastructure strategies. Extra benefits of at least $200m are achievable from the new-built $1.3b Perth Southern Area transit system. Interest is wide in other Australian cities and would yield at least $1b.
