The National Death Index (NDI) is a data base developed and maintained by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, in Canberra. The data base is a listing of all deaths that have occurred in Australia since 1980. It is an invaluable tool for epidemiologists and clinicians in following up research cohorts using record linkage.
Linkages of research data files with the NDI are usually done using the following data items: first name, second name, surname, sex, date of birth. Last contact date, if available in the research file, is used to assist in resolving uncertain cases, as may be additional information such as country of birth and state and SLA of usual residence.
