Full description

The Division of Health Sciences' newest school, the School of Population Health is one of four Schools in the Division. The School of Population Health will consolidate and advance the University of South Australia's capacity for training higher-degree research students. The only University of South Australia presence to be located at the new South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), the School brings together a mix of researchers including international leaders in social and spatial epidemiology, biostatistics, psychometrics and measurement, public health, health promotion and disease prevention, and health economics. Researchers and higher degree research students within the School will collaborate broadly with SAHMRI researchers within themes such as Indigenous health, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Research will centre on the analysis of complex population-level data to inform health and social policy, and the scientific logic and methods required for the development, implementation and evaluation of interventions to improve community health and well-being. The School will conduct service teaching across the Division in areas including population health, health promotion and public health. It is developing an accredited Master of Public Health and evolving a novel doctoral training program combining rigorous training in population health methodology with original research on contemporary health challenges. Students within the School will be exposed to innovative programs where research results are disseminated in real time to community leaders including local councils and policy makers, for use in planning and implementing health and social policy changes to support healthful living, and positive community-level opportunities and resources, for all.
