Brief description The new analytical centre funded by this proposal provides Australia with new tools to better understand the causes and effects of past, present and future changes in our environment, processes responsible for global climate change and the history of Australia's first inhabitants. This will be undertaken by using highly sensitive in-situ laser ablation and plasma methods to determine the composition of both living and fossil material that contain records of these events. Unravelling records of global climate change and understanding the effects of increased salinity and pollution on our inland waterways and coastal environments will provide a quantitative new means to better plan for an environmentally sustainable Australia.
